PARENTS: Swim Meet Attendance, Expectations and Things To KNow!

Michael Ashmore

Good afternoon! The coaching staff really appreciates when our athletes attend swim meets! This is where the biggest lessons are learned. What lessons? I am glad you asked:

1.  Failure! Whether they got DQ'd, missed a time standard or just lost the race - our constant coaching message is, "It doesn't matter EXCEPT for how you respond to this." Missed a time standard? How will you work at practice moving forward to make sure you get it next time? Got DQ'd? It's EXTREMELY likely that your coach has told you to 'touch with two hands on a breatstroke turn.'

2.  What you do at practice has a DIRECT IMPACT on how you do at the meets. How often you come, how hard you work, how well you listen and how quickly you are willing to pick up skills.

3. WEAR YOUR TEAM SWAG & GEAR. Can you imagine watching Steph Curry NOT wearing his Warriors jersey out on the court? Part of the team experience is being PART OF THE TEAM. Wear your team suit, team caps and team shirts - and we have all of that available in the office if you lost yours.

4. Help your child DO HARD THINGS! I don't wish to get too "preachy" here - but if you trust the coaching staff with nothing else - its OK to work hard, its OK to be tired from working hard. Our coaching staff has always said that "kids who do hard things develop into better people," - but now neuroscientists are finding the same thing - PEOPLE WHO PURSUE AND COMPLETE HARD & DIFFICULT TASKS show better brai development. Don't take my word for it - its science!

Thank you for your time. The coaching staff is here to help your children to develop in swimming and character skills. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
